Saint John Berchmans

I am named after St. John Berchmans (1599 -1621) who was born at Diest, in Flanders (Belgium) on March 13, 1599. He wanted to be a priest, and in 1616, he became a Jesuit novice. He was sent to Rome in 1618 to continue his studies, but died there of a contagious disease on August 13, 1621 at the age of 22. He was beatified by Pope Pius IX in 1865 and canonized by Pope Leo XIII in 1888. John Berchmans was known for his diligence and piety, impressing all with his holiness and stress on perfection in little things. He was an enthusiastic student and excellent actor and orator. He is regarded as a model for students, and is the patron saint of altar boys.
